To take the G or not to take the G

Got some questions for your Yankees

Taking a road trip from Tampa to Myrtle Beach SC, Washington DC, NY NY, Niagara Falls NY, Cleveland OH, Gatlinburg TN, and Back to Tampa.

I don't know what car to take.

I have my choice of:

2006 G35 6MT with sport tires
1989 Jeep Cherokee with 4x4 and BFG all terrains
2005 Toyota Camry FWD

Im really leaning towards the jeep because of the full time 4x4. It is also the most comfortable for long trips. It only has 105k miles on it and runs really good!

The G I think would be really nice because it is better on gas than the Jeep and it is faster... until I hit snow and Ice

The Camry is the best on gas and is FWD and I hate this car... Plus the tires are about shot!

What would you guys drive and any tips on driving in the listed areas

Put new tires on the Camry--cheap ones that cost $40 a piece in the front, and go with the Camry, as much as you hate it.

I think the camary will offer good MPG/comfort... with new front tires as Jacko recd...

The jeep would be loud, slow, and hard on gas,

The G would be fast, semi-economical, but questionable in winter conditions.

I'm really with Jacko on this one... I have my G stored for winter, I just drive it every now and again when it's nice out! Going up to NY could spell disaster this time of year...

G35 + mountain + snow = WHY DID I TAKE THE G!?!?

Just a little info on the Jeep

I have a Cherokee not a Wrangler lol

On the Highway it is smoother than both others cars, and isn't loud at all.

Also the seats are really comfy as they recline (hard to explain but make it for easy road trip sleeping)

I am getting 22mpg highway cruising at 75 mph

Also jeep would keep me out of trouble with the

Lets just say that I'm not really worried about the MPG

Would you still take the Camry?

is a fwd car better than a 4x4 jeep in snow or ice?

i would take the jeep since there is a chance of snow and mountians... i used to take my 1996 jeep on long road trips before i got my G. the jeep is a good road trip car.. i wouldnt be that worried about gas because premium gas is under $2 right now, and the jeep can run regular.

maybe a G35X would of been a better choice

You call those little hills out there MOUNTAINS??

haha

Come out here, i'll show you what a mountain is.

Take your Jeep. If you're going anywhere you think that you might need 4x4 you cant go wrong. Plus, it sounds like you are much more comfortable driving this vehicle than your camry. Better storage capacity than the G. Its the sensible choice.

Tampa:

Since you said it was a Jeep Cherokee, then go with it since it has 4X4. And yes, it is much quieter inside than both cars and probabaly as comfy or more comfy than the G. But I do know their transmission isn't that great . So, make sure you are confident it will make it to the mountains and back to Florida. Otherwise, take your cances with the Camry---I do know it will make it back with no issues.

My jeep really is a great built truck. The trans in it is very strong (I have had a jeep with a crappy trans and I know what you mean) It shifts very smooth. In the mountains I can leave it out of overdrive to help with the climbs. I have taken it over the skyway bridge (Very tall steep bridge spanning the Tampa Bay) many times and it hasn't struggled to much!

I know the Camry would make it but I think for safety reasons I should take the jeep! I have never really driven in snow so I think It would be best if I take the car that has the most traction lol

4x4 is always better in snow and ice than FWD. I have driven both in winter (much worse than what you'll see in NY) and will vote for 4x4.

I was going to say Camry with new tires, but if you aren't worried about gas, then the Jeep for sure. Plus, gas is cheap now anyway.

Nah forget the Camry. It is for elder people. Take the G and learn snow driving. You might loose some of your hair over it.

Seriously take the 4x4.

yeah GA is full of hills what we have is rain/ice/sleet and roads not built to handle it... and people who still drive 80mph+ in the rain and later you see them in a ditch up the highway... my g35x has yet to hydroplane... while my jeep hydroplaned so much that i got used to it... and would have some fun everytime it got slighly icey and the traffic permitted.

i actuallt got to use my "snow mode" on my g35x over the holiday... as it rained and i was parked in the muddy grass of my mothers house... i got out with no problem. While my jeep dugg a small mudd trench in the yard but got out too. (oh the G35 is nice and clean again )

4wd slips on ice just as good as 2wd.... 4WD wasn't designed with snow in mind, traction control was.

I would go with the Camry with new tires. It's fat and does a decent job in the snow. But quite honestly i don't forsee any real issues with any car...I would pick whatever you are most comfortable with. I can slide in the snow with my focus, a G, a Z, my a/c, a jeep, and anything else - it's not the car, it's how you handle the car. I've never had issues with sliding around in the snow - just make sure you have decent all season tires on whatever car you take

Does the Camry have traction and stability control? if not go with the Jeep.

If you never been in upstate NY this time of year, you will need a 4x4 just to
get you out of the snow, forget the ice,the snow can get to a couple feet in
no time upstate.

Wait-what?! It's also lifted, right? You have a smoother ride with the Jeep...mine feels like a tank when I drive it. Of course, right now it seems to be having some issues so it doesn't get driven. Someone else said it but here it is anyways: G35X!

In CO I had no choice and don't regret it one bit in winter...Better go buy that X before you leave!

Up here in Canada we have bad mountain conditions! I drove my Maxima on 18" rims with performance tires from Vancouver BC to my home In Calgary Alberta, So through the Rocky Mountains in the middle of January. Before the Maxima I had a Pathfinder. The pathfinder was worse in the snow than the Maxima. It’s an 11 hour drive and on the way home I saw at least 5 4X4 trucks and SUVs rolled over in the snow banks. No cars. Sure it’s great that the jeep has 4X4 but it doesn’t have ABS. more than anything you want ABS. when the jeep starts slipping (and it will) you are going to hit the brakes and then all 4 tires are going to lock up and you will then have basically zero stopping ability and you will no longer be able to control the steering. No matter what way you turn the wheel it’s going to keep sliding whatever direction it wants. The only reason the Maxima is better than the pathfinder was is because the maxima has ABS and the Pathfinder didn’t. I put some winter tires on the Maxima and it has better traction from a stop than the pathfinder did as well. I would strongly recommend putting some new tires on the Camry and driving it! If you haven’t driven on snow you won’t understand the benefits of ABS. But if you drove the jeep and the Camry on the same icy road and tried stopping you would see why the Camry is a much much better choice!!

I also have abs and a new brake booster in the jeep. I upgraded calipers from a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4x4 as well as the axles were replaced from the same jeep.

The brakes are really good on the Jeep!

Do you recommend using less air pressure in the BFG's? To provide more traction on the road?

That's all true and all, one can spin any car on ice or something slippery. However, 4x4 is great in snow. Trust me. I've driven through real, actual blizzards where you literally can't see past your hood and with 2.5' of snow already on the ground. Any car on the road would have been eaten up by the ditch.

Take the Jeep.

Ok so I am going to take the Jeep! Plus I am going to be in the mountains and the low range will be very helpful on those icy roads that lead up and down to the cabin Im staying in!

I will be getting it aligned, changing the oil, I changed the transfer case, transmission, and differential oil last week. I will also be flushing out the coolant so that I can make sure that I have the proper ratio to prevent freezing. Anything else you guys could suggest?

I wouldnt put it in low range going up an icy road. low range gives you tons more torque. the last thing you want on an icy road it more power that can make the wheels start spinning. I would just leave it in 4 high and put the shifter in 2nd. so even when your stopped it will start out in second. When it is really icy up here sometimes I have to start out in 2nd becasue 1st just breaks the wheels free and then once you start spinning out its hard to get traction again.

Oh haha I see. Though you did say that low range would be helpful for the icy roads that lead up and down to the cabin. So you can see why I would assume. And regaurdless, I used to take my pathfinder out off roading all the time. low range was almost never even needed. Im sure with the amount of power the jeep has you wont even need low range. Good luck with the trip!
